In the spring of 1864 Laura Connor sets out alone from her home in Indiana driving a wagon and team of horses. She has determined to rescue her husband, Thomas, a captured Union soldier, from the Confederate prison at Cahawba in Alabama.

With each step of her journey she descends further into the heart of the war’s darkness scourged landscapes, a Confederate surgeon faced with the aftermath of a battle, bereaved mothers of wounded and killed soldiers, runaway slaves, and somewhere in the swamps in a lost and dying country, the prison. She has no idea how she will be received there or even if Thomas is still alive. At the prison Thomas fights against despair, hunger, disease and the prison commandant, ultimately deciding that escape is his only alternative.

Inspired by a true occurrence, Casualties is a story of the power of love, and of the strength and heroism of ordinary people confronting overwhelming events.

Casualties A Novel of the Civil War eBook David Rothstein

I truly hope this book will become a classic. It contains not one dull page. As a young married couple, Laura and Thomas have dreams just like all young folks. Their dream becomes a nightmare when the Civil War breaks out and Thomas goes off to fight for the Union. The book deals superbly with his time in battle. Then, he is captured by the Confederates and sent to Cahawba prison camp where the author describes the horror and degredation in a manner like I have never read before.
Laura decides to go to the prison and get her husband released. That starts another adventure that will keep you spellbound. She learns the true horror of war for both sides. She discovers the evil of slavery. Most of all, she discovers her inner self; her strengths and her weaknesses.
Her determination to not only make the long,800 mile trip alone but to also return home with her husband leads her into a world she never could have imagined.
This is just an amazing story told by a very gifted author. The ending will absolutely astound you.
On a personal note, I have followed the Civil War for 40 plus years and can't even guess at how many books I've read. This one is without a doubt among the best.

Casualties A Novel of the Civil War eBook David Rothstein Reviews

This book is one of the most well written, moving and vivid novels I've ever read. The characters are people you immediately care about and want to know more about. Once you start reading this book you won't be able to put it down. The journey they take you on will stay with you long after you've read the last page. Your tears will be real and plentiful. Civil War buff or not, this book is a must read.
David Rothstein has passionately described the glory and horror of the civil war, and the state and depth of his characters souls.
His novel captures Civil War complexity and intimacy of the conditions, and the strength of love, loyalty and dedication of his characters.
Rothstein's novel is a gripping, tender, incisive story that will stay with you long after you have finished, leaving you looking forward to the sequel.

This book is an excellent read. The descriptions of battles and soldiers is very real feeling. The frustrations of the main characters if palpable. The characters are so well defined, you begin to really care about them and their struggles.
This book is well-written and believable, and I've read it twice. I loved it because I'm a history buff, but many would find it an enjoyable read. The story is not unlike a real incident from the Civil War era.
Women, if you read no other novel this year, you must read this one. She is our heroine! When Laura sets out on her journey to get her husband, you are with her every step of the way. You know why she did it, you feel her fear and her growing strength and you wonder if you could do the same thing! The people Laura meets along the way are characters so strong and so compelling that you can see them and hear their voices--they're the kind of people who do not leave you easily. Thomas is a man with the courage to match his dreams as he fights against the despair and horror of the prison to keep his humanity and to save himself and two boys who were captured with him. The writing is beautiful--it carries you forward effortlessly, even into scenes that depict the horrors of the war, at times it becomes almost too vivid. Casualties is the perfect title for this novel. It is as close as you will come to actually being there. You do not want the story to end for fear it won't end the way you want it to. And I agree with the other reviewer who said this novel must become a movie...it could and would be one you would not soon forget...Cold Mountain pales in comparison...
What terrible atrocities men committed on each other in the 4 years of this horrible war, and this story only scratches the surface of it. It is hard for us to imagine how civilized people could have sunken to this animalistic level in the war years, but we continue to do so even now. Even though there were many unforgivable acts committed then, the kindness and caring of so many clearly shines through. What an emotionally charged novel, that is very well written. Maybe there is hope for us after all!
This book will open your eyes to the realities of war. During this dark time in Americas History our nation was torn to pieces. Although this novel was a fictional account, it portrays the reality of what our people endured.
When you read the last entry I pray you follow that single word "Don't".
We must remember.
As I close this book, I am struck by a reality. Although the North was officially declared triumphant, were there truly any winners? I put that question to you, the reader. I honestly don't think there were. We carry the scars of that horrid time period. And I pray our nation never faces anything such as that again.
